PWWG is restoring three structures at historic Old Economy Village in Ambridge, PA, under our term contract with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. The work, as always, encompasses forensic evaluation, restorative design, and coordinating artisan craftspeople from the preservation trades. Projects currently underway include: Cleaning industrial and atmospheric pollution from the fieldstone walls of the Grotto; Restoring the interior layout and all historic finishes of the Rapp House; and design and construction of a new cedar shake roof for the Granary.

Under a term contract with West Virginia University, PWWG is leading a total rehabilitation and preservation of the historic Old Main Building at WVU, Montgomery. The structure houses classrooms and the university’s administrative offices. PWWG’s scope of work includes restoration and repair of exterior masonry, inspection and rehabilitation of the original slate roof, selected upgrades to interior spaces and finishes, installation of a new elevator, and an upgrade of all lighting, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fire proofing systems.
PWWG COMPLETES EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR RENOVATION OF WADSWORTH HALL COMMUNITY CENTER AT OAK HILL

PWWG’s project recycles and upgrades all spaces and systems in a mid-20th century building that was the original community center for a former public housing project. As part of a phased expansion of the Oak Hill development, a new mixed income urban neighborhood rejuvenating Pittsburgh’s Hill District, renovated Wadsworth Hall retains its community center function as a focus for health, social, educational, and vocational programs with an emphasis on youth. The building includes a community room, classrooms, computer lab, and support service offices with new site improvements including a pool, playground, landscaping, tennis and basketball courts.
PWWG COMPLETES STUDENT HOUSING CONVERSION FOR CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY

PWWG completed Phase 2 of a fast-track project under a term contract with Carnegie Mellon University employing our expertise in adaptive reuse. The first phase of The Residence on Fifth converted a former nursing home to undergraduate suites for 93 students. This round of work created offices, conference rooms, and a new employee kitchen for the campus’ Housing and Dining Services. PWWG also replaced the roof, and developed life-cycle improvements that will make the building easier to maintain over time. The project has reportedly been well received by students for its layout, stylish ambiance, and amenities.

NAHRO, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, has honored PWWG with Awards of Excellence for the design of Laurel Estates, a new Traditional Neighborhood Development in Uniontown, PA, and Vermeire Manor, a renovation and conversion of apartments for seniors in Sharon, PA. NAHRO Awards of Excellence recognize outstanding innovation and achievement in housing and community development programs throughout the country. Entries were chosen from projects selected at the regional level earlier this year. These projects will be honored in articles in the Journal of Housing and Community Development.

This new building will be home to the Chemistry Department and each health care major offered at WLU, including the Departments of Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Physician Assistant Studies, Medical Laboratory Science, and Speech Pathology and Audiology. The firm is currently completing construction administration for two additional projects at WLU, at historic Shaw Hall and Main Hall.

PWWG is working on a variety of projects for Carnegie Mellon University employing our expertise in historic restoration and adaptive reuse. The firm is completing the second phase of the project at 4700 Fifth Avenue to convert a former nursing home to student apartment suites; a forensic investigation of historic Margaret Morrison Hall; and implementation of Life Safety improvements at Mellon Institute.
TWO PWWG PROJECTS AT WVU PARKERSBURG POISED TO START CONSTRUCTION

PWWG will begin construction administration in July for two new standalone projects at West Virginia University’s growing Parkersburg campus. The new 19,000 sf Applied Technology Center (ATC) will house the campus’ skills training facilities for its programs in welding, electricity and instrumentation, and industrial machining.
The Child Development Center (CDC) is a 5,100 sf child care and teaching facility. The project scope includes office and administration spaces, play, learning and sleeping rooms for infants through pre-kindergarten, adult learning classrooms, an atrium/event room, kitchen and laundry. The curriculum incorporates a highly innovative mix of arts, literacy, culture and technology in modes beyond the traditional classroom environment.

Congratulations to Lisa Carver, AIA who recently became a registered architect in Pennsylvania. Lisa is also a LEED Accredited Professional, and she serves on the board of West Park Court, one of PWWG’s award-winning rehab/re-skinning projects. This brings PWWG’s registered architectural staff to 11 of 14 total.

Turley Center, an existing vacant building, will be adapted for reuse as a Student Access and Success Center. The project includes replacing existing finishes, walls, mechanical and electrical systems on all three levels of the building. PWWG will also complete historic renovations at National Register Hardway Hall including façade repairs, and upgrades and replacement of mechanical and electrical systems throughout the building. Hardway is used for administrative and classroom functions, and is one of the first structures to be seen by visitors to the campus.
TWO PROJECTS AT WEST LIBERTY STARTING CONSTRUCTION

Two projects designed by PWWG at West Liberty University in West Virginia are under construction. Historic Shaw Hall will be comprehensively renovated to house the university’s administrative offices, conference and work rooms, campus security office, and a student health center. The scope of work included creating a new passenger elevator in the core of the existing building, and extensive interior renovations and restorations. PWWG utilized a building information modeling (BIM) process to explore and document the design.
At Main Hall, PWWG designed a comprehensive window replacement of windows from two different eras, the 1930’s and the 1960’s, and coordinated the overall aesthetic of the building. All window units will have low-E Argon filled glazing for increased energy performance.
PWWG COMPLETES DESIGN OF 21c MUSEUM HOTEL IN CINCINNATI

PWWG has completed the construction documents for the comprehensive renovation of the former Metropole Hotel, a National Register building in the heart of downtown Cincinnati, to serve as a 160 room 21c Museum Hotel. 21c Cincinnati follows on the heels of the client’s critically acclaimed project in Louisville that has been voted the #1 hotel in the US for two consecutive years. PWWG serves as the Executive Architect and Architect of Record in conjunction with Design Architect Deborah Berke and Partners (NYC).

PWWG SELECTED FOR WVU TERM SERVICES CONTRACT

PWWG was one of only eight firms to receive an Open End Professional Architectural and Engineering Services Agreement from West Virginia University, from among 60+ applicants. The contract is initially for five years. Through this selection, PWWG becomes a long term partner in the growth of the University, with an exclusive invitation to propose on a variety of A/E projects at WVU’s main campus in Morgantown and at all of the University’s regional campuses and other State Institutions of Higher Education. Under a separate contract in 2008, PWWG completed WVU’s first LEED Certified project, Oglebay Hall and Ming Hsieh Hall.

PWWG is pleased to have been selected for two new projects at West Liberty University and West Virginia University at Parkersburg. At WLU, the firm will be undertaking a renovation of historic Shaw Hall along with a comprehensive window replacement at Main Hall. For WVUP, we are designing a new 20,000 SF Applied Technology Center to house the welding and industrial maintenance programs. We are also designing a new Child Development Center. Both will be independent, stand alone buildings on the growing WVUP campus.

PWWG RECEIVES TWO AWARDS AT DESIGN PITTSBURGH

PWWG captured two awards in the 2010 AIA Pittsburgh design awards program. The firm received an Honor Award in Regional and Urban Design for our master plan for the National Center for Youth Science Education to be located in Davis, WV. The firm also received a Certificate of Merit for the design of the West General Robinson Street Garage located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.
NEW RESIDENCE HALL OPENS AT CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY

Working in conjunction with CMU and Graziano Construction, Phase 1 of the PWWG designed conversion of 4700 Fifth Avenue in Oakland opened to students in August 2010. The building, which formerly served as an assisted living and hospice facility, was designed and constructed on a fast track process to meet the demands of the academic calendar.
NEW PROJECT AT ALLEGHENY COLLEGE

PWWG is working with Massaro Construction in a design/build project to renovate Carr Hall at Allegheny College to house the new Richard J. Cook Center for Environmental Sciences. The new facility will contain labs, classrooms and offices for the Environmental Sciences Department. The renovation will incorporate sustainable strategies including increased energy efficiency, improved indoor air quality, and extensive use of daylighting.
