Oglebay and Ming Hsieh Halls, WVU
Morgantown, WV — LEED CERTIFIEDThe ensemble finessed challenging topography to create accessible entrances at four levels and streamline pedestrian traffic when classes change. Site stairs, bridges, and a new memorial plaza return students to the historic campus core. A terrace between the buildings creates an outdoor room with a view, and a pedestrian bridge spanning University Ave. eliminates conflict between students and cars.
Rejuvenated Oglebay Hall increases density in this Beaux Arts building with state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, and support spaces inserted in the gutted shell to house WVU’s Forensic and Investigative Science Program. Mechanical systems were hidden in the existing attic and chimneys. The rich exterior palette of brick, limestone and terra-cotta has been restored.
New Ming Hsieh Hall allowed a vacant slice of land to accommodate two technology intensive lecture halls, classrooms and roof parking. The design interprets existing Oglebay’s form, materials, and detailing in modern ways.
